The exponential growth of multimedia systems throughout education, industry and culture and the migration of these systems to the world wide web, cable and satellite delivery and distribution has led to a high demand for individuals with a breadth of theoretical understanding and a broad range of creative design and technical skills.

"Higher and further education is currently only providing media chosen specialisms within the cureent paradigms of arts, amangement and science disciplines. what is required is the development of people for the trans- and cross-disciplinary environments which will equip the future UK workforce to compete in the global convergent media industries."
Skills for the Missing Industry, Terry Speake and Professor James Powell OBE 1997
